Find an Archived, Unread, Muted, Spam, Deleted (trash) email by Search

Background:

  • Messages you archived aren't deleted, and you can find them at any time.
  • Archived Messages. Once you archive an email, your emails are moved to a label called "All Mail." When you archive a message: The message will come back to your inbox when someone replies to it.  Or you can search for the conversation if you want to find it again.  
  • Mute (or ignore) Messages.  When you mute a message: Any replies stay out of your inbox. You can search for the conversation if you want to find it again.
  • Unread Messages.  If you messages are piling up quickly, you can search by unread messages.
  • Deleted or Spam Messages. When you delete a message, it stays in your Trash for 30 days. After that time, it will be permanently deleted from your account and can't be recovered.  

How to Search "All Mail" for Archived or Muted

  1. On your computer, go to Gmail.
  2. In the Search Box at the top, enter what you'd like to find.
  3. Ensure that the Search is set to All Mail
  4. Press Enter.

How to Search "Unread" Email

  1. On your computer, go to Gmail.
  2. In the Search Box at the top, enter what you'd like to find.
  3. Ensure that the Search is set to Unread Mail
  4. To further refine the search, use the Date within to narrow down to the last week
  5. Press Enter.

Search for a specific email

  1. On your computer, go to Gmail.
  2. In the Search Box at the top, enter what you'd like to find.
  3. Press Enter. A list of emails will show. 
  4. To further refine the search, use the search filter chips below the Search Box or the search operators in the Search Box.
    • To use the search filter chips, click on them. You can click as many as you want. 

Tip: You can also search for emails from a particular sender. In your inbox, right-click on an email from the sender.

Search for a Deleted or Spam email

  1. On your computer, go to Gmail.
  2. In the Search Box at the top, enter what you'd like to find.
  3. Ensure that the Search is set to Mail & Spam & Trash
  4. Press Enter. A list of emails will show. 
  5. To further refine the search, use the search filter chips below the Search Box or the search operators in the Search Box.
    • To use the search filter chips, click on them. You can click as many as you want.

Tip: When you delete a message, it stays in your Trash for 30 days. After that time, it will be permanently deleted. If you want to remove a message from your inbox but you don't want to delete it, you can archive the message.
