An Overview of Google Groups at Blake: 3 Types of Groups (Conference, Mailing List, Collaborative / Internet Inbox) – Support @Blake (Information Support Support Services)

I. Sending a new post from email - address change:

The most important change is if you send posts from your Mail application. Be sure you address the posts to email addresses listed in the “Directory,” which are located under the grey bar. (To illustrate, see Fig. 1: Directory addresses are in the green box).

If you post directly to the group, you will not be affected by this change.

II. Review the list of Google Groups:

If you would like to review list of Google Groups at Blake listed by Division/Department, please click here: Google Groups Directory. (Requests for membership should be sent directly to the “Primary Owner” listed on the worksheet. Primary Owners will review your request.) There are three common types of Groups for most Blake communication are listed below.

III. Review the typical types of Groups:

Type A: Conferences

Only members can read posts in this group.
Only members can send emails or post this group.
Conference email addresses are typically “name_of_group-CONFERENCE@blakeschool.org.”
A majority of conferences are NOT listed in the Google Groups Directory, labeled “Browse all” from the Group home page.

For example, PK-12 Info CONFERENCE is to disseminate information to all employees across the campuses. Only members can read and post messages to this group.

Type B: Mailing Lists

Only members can read posts in this group.
Anyone with a @blakeschool.org email address can send emails or post this group. (Grades 3-12 students are provided email as well as employees.)
Mailing Lists email addresses are typically “name_of_group-MAILINGLIST@blakeschool.org.”
A majority of mailing lists groups are listed in the Google Groups Directory, labeled “Browse all” from the Group home page.

For example, BC Classroom Teachers MAILING LIST group provides a forum for anyone with a @blakeschool.org email address to send a notice for the LS Blake Campus Classroom Faculty. Still, only members can read messages send to this group.

Type C: Collaborative / Internet Inboxes to receive emails from outside of Blake

Only members can read posts in this group.
Anyone with an email address can send emails or post this group.
Collaborative inbox email addresses are typically “name_of_group@blakeschool.org.”
A majority of conferences are NOT listed in the Google Groups Directory, labeled “Browse all” from the Group home page since they tend to be for parents or non-Blake employees.

For example, the Parent Association (pa@blakeschool.org) group provides a forum for anyone to send a notice to the Parent Association Leadership. Still, only members can read messages sent to this group.

Groups are managed directly the “primary owner,” requests for membership should be directed to them via email. Group ownership is listed in the Google Groups Directory.
